Betty White’s 90th Birthday Individual Cakes!!

Right after Christmas I had the great honor of getting a phone call from none other then the General Mills company-the home of Betty Crocker. Their request? For me to collaborate with Betty Crocker to make 300 individual birthday cakes for a star studded gala celebrating Betty Whites 90th birthday!! The party was filmed by NBC for a special called “Betty White’s 90th Birthday: A Tribute to Americas Golden Girl” being filmed on January 7th, airing January 16th! I was floored with excitement and overwhelmed with the number-300 cakes??! Could we even pull that off in a weeks time I wondered? Well, we did! We made Betty’s guests 300 delicious chocolate cakes filled with chocolate mousse, chocolate ganache, and iced them all with chocolate buttercream. Back in Minneapolis, Robin Martin from Gateaux Cakes was also collaborating with Betty Crocker to make the 3 tier celebration cake for Betty! Here is a peek at our 10′ x 12′ walk in filled to the brim with chocolate cakes!

The individual cakes were covered in an orange fondant with a gold beaded trim and were garnished with a fondant rose, gift tag, and had fondant confetti sprinkled on the plates.

We had some major assembly lines going to get them all done, thanks to tons of extra helping hands and bad music to keep us laughing and going strong working till all hours of the morning!

On the day of the event, we delivered all the little cakes to the Biltmore in downtown Los Angeles, where we were met by the Betty Crocker team and the fabulous girls from Gateaux Cakes from Minnesota!!

Robin and Jenna from Gateaux also collaborated with Betty Crocker to make the 3 tiered birthday cake for Betty White and they flew it out on the corporate jet just for Betty! Wow!! Robin and her team were so incredibly fantastic, we were so lucky to get to work with such wonderful people on this project and made some fabulous friends in them! Robin, Jenna, and I totally bonded on the phone over the course of that week collaborating on decorations and discussing all the details and when we got to the hotel they all jumped in to finish platting all the little cakes with us, thank God for them!! I just can’t say enough about how great they are!

We were so incredibly lucky to have been given full rein of the pastry kitchen in the Biltmore for the day to assemble and plate all the cakes in! The chef was so kind and came to check on us all the time offering food and encouragement. I was thrilled to pieces with how the cakes turned out and to see all 300 of the individual cakes completely finished and set out on the tables in the Crystal Ballroom was an incredible moment for me. I am so proud of my team for all the hard work they gave me that week, they really had fantastic work ethic and drive and they kept me sane! Collaborating with Betty Crocker for Betty White’s 90th birthday was such an incredible honor and memories I will cherish forever.

Here’s a picture I took of the show, you can see a peek of the mini cakes on the table in the lower right hand corner! ;)

Typically I like chocolate the best. After reading some of the comments I think I might try the Supermoist White cake…might be good with lemon filling in the middle too. Love the pics of all your cakes!
